WATERVILLE, Maine — Spike Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had one goal and an assist and teammate Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) had assists on both goals for Colby College, but University of Massachusetts at Boston scored two power play goals on the way to a 3-2 victory Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.) scored with 8:20 remaining in the contest for the game-winning goal for UMB.
UMass-Boston moves to 1-1 overall, while the Mules are 0-2 after dropping two one-goal games on opening weekend.
Smigelski scored his second goal of the young season for the Mules off assists from Kondiles and Tom McGinn (St. Albans, Vt.) at 6:24 of the first period.
Power play goals helped the Beacons take a 2-1 lead. Andrew Burke (Southampton, Pa.) tallied with the extra man at 15:05 of the first period from Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, Okla.) and Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, Pa.). Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mich.) added the second power play goal at 5:55 of the second period from Tufman and Chris Wilcox (Hollywood, Fla.). UMB was 2-for-6 on the power play and held the Mules scoreless on their two opportunities.
Colby made it 2-2 after two periods when Cory McGrath (Yarmouthport, Mass.) scored with 4:23 to play in the period from Smigelski and Kondiles.
Thomas Speer (Wausau, Wis.) stopped 21 shots to earn the Beacon win, while Colby goalkeeper James Lemonias (Hingham, Mass.) had 16 of his 33 saves in the first period.
