Maine Sweeps Hockey East Weekly Awards

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team swept the Hockey East weekly awards this week as Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) was named the Pure Hockey Player of the Week, Melissa Gagnon (St. Gilles, Quebec) the Defensive Player of the Week and Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.

Maine was named the Hockey East Team of the Week after sweeping Sacred Heart 6-0 and 8-1 over the weekend.

Ward scored a pair of game-winning goals as the Black Bears opened the season with a sweep of Sacred Heart. She tallied a goal and an assist in each game of Maine’s weekend series against the Pioneers. She finished the weekend with two goals and two assists for four points.

Gagnon spearheaded Maine’s defense, which allowed just one goal and 24 shots in two games. She also chipped in offensively with a goal and two assists in the series against Sacred Heart.

More scored two goals, one on the power play, and added an assist for three points in her collegiate debut weekend.

Maine outscored Sacred Heart 14-1 on the weekend. Maine went 4-for-11 on the power play. The Black Bears outshot the Pioneers 135-24. The Black Bears amassed 72 shots on goal in the victory on Saturday.

Maine returns to action when it travels to Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 7.
