Portland, Maine – Nathan Gerbe and Mark Mancari scored shootout goals to lift the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Lowell Devils in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,904 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
J.P. Lamoureux stopped all four attempts he faced in the shootout to help the Pirates end a two-game winless streak. T.J. Brennan and Tyler Ennis, who forced overtime with five minutes remaining in regulation, scored in regulation for the Pirates while Mike Kostka collected an assist to extend his point/assist-scoring streak to six games (seven assists). Portland used the victory to improve to 37-22-5-4 on the season and five points up on Lowell in the race for second in the Atlantic Division.
Nick Palmieri and Matt Halischuk scored for the Devils, who dropped to 34-25-4-5 on the year.
Brennan opened the scoring midway through the first period but Palmieri evened things up six minutes later as the two teams ended the first tied at one. Halischuk put the visitors up by one as he struck late in the period to send the Devils into the third up 2-1. Ennis struck late in the third to force extra time.
The Pirates out shot the Devils 43-29.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Ennis; 2. Lowell goalie Mike McKenna and 3. Brennan.
The Pirates head out onto the road for their next two games. Friday they travel to Manchester to face the Monarchs in a 7:30 p.m. start.
